The University of Tokyo and Shibaura Institute of Technology launched a new laboratory in Sado

6/4/2023 Sado island (Sado City, Niigata Prefecture)

A new satellite office of the University of Tokyo Institute for Future Initiatives (IFI) and Shibaura Institute of Technology Research Center for Regional Co-creation Basis (ReCoBa) was launched in Sado city.

Sado city was designated as the decarbonization leading area in 2022, and academia-public-private collective efforts are being made to solve island-specific energy problems and other sustainability issues in the region. The launch of the laboratory by the academia is expected to further promote its community-based researches as well as enhance Sado’s presence in various areas.

About Gakkogura: Gakkogura is a brewery run by Obata Shuzo in Sado island, a local company in business for over 130 years. It’s uniqueness is seen in its facilities, a renovation of elementary school closed because of fewer children. Blessed with rich natural resources generated in Sado island, Obata Shuzo is proud to produce Japanese Sake made from Sado’s rice, water, and energy (from solar).
